The Strada del Ponale is one of the most iconic routes on Lake Garda. Built between 1848 and 1851 as an Austro-Hungarian military road, it is now a cycle-pedestrian path carved into the rock above the sheer lakeside cliff. Climbing from Riva del Garda, every bend reveals more spectacular views until you reach the crystal-clear Lake Ledro with its UNESCO-listed prehistoric pile-dwelling village.
Highlights
- Ponale road carved into the cliff – 9 km of sheer panoramas over Lake Garda
- Lake Ledro and UNESCO Pile Dwellings – prehistoric lakeside settlement museum
- Bar Ponale Alto – mid-climb refreshment stop with a breathtaking terrace
Practical tips
The path is shared with pedestrians – always descend at moderate speed, especially on bends. On an e-bike the climb (~650 m D+ in 9 km) is accessible even to unfit riders. Carry enough water.
